Alopecia areata: A disease of the body that is a common cause of hair loss that affects approximately two million Americans.
Alopecia totalis: When the condition of hair loss spreads until all of the hair on the scalp is gone.
Alopecia universalis: When the condition of hair loss spreads over the entire body affecting areas including eyebrows and eyelashes.
Anagen effluvium: The condition of hair loss that is caused by medications that poison the hair follicle. A common medicine that causes hair loss due to anagen effluvium is chemotherapy.
Androgen: The male hormone family of which testosterone is a member.
Androgenetic alopecia: The modern medical term for female or male patterned baldness or alopecia.
Bonding: Bonding is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss that is achieved by using a medical adhesive which attaches a unit of human hair, selected and died to match your color, texture, and consistency, to your head.
Chemotherapy: The treatment of cancerous cells that involves administering drugs that destroy rapidly producing cancer cells.
DHT: Dihydrotestosterone; a product of testosterone that causes pattern baldness.

Traction alopecia: Hair loss that is caused by physical stress and tenstion on the hair, such as hair weaving or corn rows that are done too tightly.
